President & CEO
Mr. Mataczynski brings a multi-faceted approach to his leadership role as President and CEO of RES Americas. Throughout his career, Mr. Mataczynski has built a record of success, consistently grown the bottom line of companies by increasing revenues, implementing operating efficiencies and utilizing innovative financing strategies. Among his achievements, Mr. Mataczynski acquired interests in four bankrupt companies, developed complex restructuring plans, and turned each of them around. In addition, he was instrumental in growing two successful start-ups, including an $8 million pharmaceutical company that became profitable in 2002.
As president and CEO of NRG North America from 1998 to 2002, Mr. Mataczynski had responsibility for $4 billion in revenues and $250 million of net income. He led nine regional business units, each with their own income statement, allocating resources and managing priorities among each of these units. He established division-wide standards for safety, operational performance and management reporting; and instituted strategic direction for the division consistent with the Company's strategy. At NRG, Mr. Mataczynski developed and implemented a strategic plan that grew the company ten-fold. When the generation of electricity was deregulated, Mr. Mataczynski assembled a diverse team to research the industry’s direction and identify attractive markets. In turn, he created a vision statement and developed a series of strategic objectives that made NRG North America a leader in the competitive marketplace.
Mr. Mataczynski further capitalized on the restructured utility industry by forming a JV for NRG North America with Dynegy. The JV acquired 2,600 MW of generating capacity in California for a total investment of $500 million, and earned a ROI of more than 15%. When NRG North America was looking to finance new growth opportunities, Mr. Mataczynski played a key role in the company’s successful IPO.
In addition, Mr. Mataczynski developed a Power Marketing entity for NRG North America that added $40 million to the company’s bottom line by expanding its revenue base and improving asset utilization. He also implemented the formal policies and procedures necessary for the size and scope of the business, equalling approximately $4 billion per year in revenues.
Among Mr. Mataczynski’s most notable successes was the dramatic turnaround of a bankrupt competitor. Working with the equity committee, he structured a plan that when implemented more than doubled the company’s value and gave NRG a 48% interest in the company. This improved the company’s value by $70 million and generated $105 million for public shareholders.
In addition to his role as president of RES Americas, Mr. Mataczynski is a member of the Board of Directors for SmartScience Laboratories. During his time there, he was instrumental in setting up the Company’s various management reporting systems. He provided oversight for FDA compliance programs and direction to sales and marketing programs.
Mr. Mataczynski also sits on the management board of EcoLogic Analytics, a developer of meter data management software. During his tenure, the company’s subscribership has grown from 1 million to over 11 million.
Prior to his work with NRG, Mr. Mataczynski held several positions with Northern States Power Company, including Director of Corporate Strategy and Development. Mr. Mataczynski also served as Director of Power Supply Finance, Senior Treasury Analyst, Fuels Engineer and Nuclear Engineer.
Mr. Mataczynski earned a BS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1982; he also holds a MBA from the University of Minnesota, and completed the Advanced Management & International Strategic Managers Program at Harvard Business School.
