2008 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

September 1 – 4

Sept 1:  RES Amercas staff headed to the twin cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) to attend the Republican National Convention.  It got off to a slow start as Hurricane Gustav hit our coast and the Republicans focused their thoughts on those affected by the storm.

Sept 2:  As the storm dissipated, the convention got more energized.  RES Americas co-sponsored the joint wind and solar party, hosted by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), at the Solera in Minneapolis.   "Clean Energy - NOW" was the theme, as it was in Denver, and our folks were excited to be a part of it.

Sept 3: The convention got electrified as Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, was nominated to be John McCain's Vice President.  She spoke, below, about the importance of using all the natural resources we can, including renewable energy such as wind and solar.

Sept 4: Our staff listened below to John McCain, as he touched upon the need to use all energy resources, including wind, to get our independence from foreign oil.  "We must use all resources and develop all technologies necessary to rescue our economy from the damage caused by rising oil prices and to restore the health of our planet.

2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

August 25 – 28

August 25:  RES Americas kicked off the convention by co-sponsoring the Welcome To Denver Reception hosted by Mayor John Hickenlooper and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) on August 25, 2008 at the Wynkoop Brewing Company.

 AWEA Party

The theme of the night was "Clean Energy - NOW".  The Mayor called out to all legislators, in attendance, to go back to Washington and pass the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for renewable energy.

Mayor Hickenlooper, below, led the audience in a rallying cry:

"What do we want" - Clean energy

"When do we want it" - NOW!

The evening was then more energized by the Flobots, who got the crowd dancing as the social issue lyrics emcompassed the room.

August 26 - RES Americas attended Governor Ritter's (CO) New Energy Economy Reception, which was held at the Governor's mansion.  Gov. Ritter said that Colorado is 6th in the nation for being the sunniest state and 8th for being the windiest.  He wants to make Colorado 1st in the nation for renewable energy development.  The key issues he stated were:

  • Colorado and the nation need to continue pushing for renewable energy initiatives.
  • There are a lot of leaders in the state who have taken on this task, especially Xcel Energy, who opened it's grid to allow renewable energy resources.
  • He applauded Vestas for continuing to invest in Colorado as they just opened up another manufacturing plant in Pueblo, CO, which will add around 550 new jobs when the plant opens in 2009.

August 27 - As we begin to delve into emerging renewables, RES Americas attended the Sunfest 2008, hosted by the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Speaking at Coors Field, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. addressed the crowd about the importance of solar energy.  The sun shown down on the audience, almost as a testament of how strong and abundant it really is. One clear argument Kennedy made is that "there is no such thing as clean coal", which he said some groups are proposing.  Mr. Kennedy spoke of how we "have to start protecting our environment infrastructure", indicating that solar is the way to do it, as the crowd cheered on.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Following him, Congressman Dennis Cardoza (CA), spoke about the need for individual responsibility to use renewable energy sources.  He spoke of the credits he received in California for having solar panels on his house and how in 5 years, the reduction in his electric bill paid for the solar panels.  Congressman Cardoza ended with stating that congress "has to continue to push for renewable tax credits."

August 28 - RES Americas staff headed to Invesco Field to hear Barack Obama talk about his plans for renewable energy in this country.  In his acceptance speech he said "As President...I'll invest 150 billion dollars over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy - wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can't ever be outsourced."
